2017 New member of council and our biggest ever audience

Friday 24th March 2017

New Treasurer

At our SGM on 20th February CSAR members elected Sue McMeekin as Treasurer for a period of three years from 1 March, and we thanked the outgoing Treasurer, Dr Eddie Powell, for his excellent stewardship of the finances of CSAR.

Thanks are also given to Professor David Adamson who stepped down from council in March after several years of excellent service.

Audience Numbers Increasing

Our numbers are increasing - membership has trebled since December 2016 and Demis Hassabis drew our largest audience yet this year.

2016 AGM and Honorary Membership awards

Wednesday 16th November 2016

Our Annunal General Meeting was held on 14th November 2016. Amongst other items on the agenda were the re-election of council members (listed below), and the presentation of Honorary Membership to Mr Robin Bligh.

The President, Sir David Wallace said:

"Robin Bligh has been on the Council of CSAR for probably more than thirty years – our archive isn’t complete enough for us to be definitive! He was initially ‘Corporate Secretary’ and latterly Honorary Treasurer. As well as producing annual accounts, he was successful in registering the society as a charity with the Charity Commission and subsequently for keeping us in its good books. As a result, to date almost £6000 has been recovered from HMRC through reclaiming Gift Aid on donations. He retired in 2015, with CSAR finances in their best state ever.

In his wider contributions as a member of Council, he was always thoughtful, a source of invaluable wisdom and completely committed to the well-being of the Society. It gives me the greatest of pleasure on behalf of Cambridge Society for the Application of Research to admit Robin Bligh as an Honorary Member."

All hail the new CSAR!

Tuesday 11th October 2016

CSAR has been busy over the summer... not only do we have a fantastic line-up of lectures for the year, but we also have a wonderful new website! The first CSAR website was set up in 2001 by Nigel and Eileen Bennee, and Nigel has been updating it single-handedly for the past 15 years.

This summer we commissioned the help of Dan Barrett of Brandman, who redesigned our logo and stationery, and Cambridge web design and marketing agency Postscript, who redesigned and built the site to a modern, responsive design intended to work equally well on smartphones and mobile devices as well as on the desktop, and which can now be maintained and updated by a team of people with access to the user-friendly but powerful content management system.

So, a fond farewell to our old website...

...and a warm welcome to our new one!
