Revealing the artists’ secrets.

Professor Erma Hermens is Director of the Hamilton Kerr Institute for Easel Painting Conservation and Deputy Director Conservation and Heritage Science at the Fitzwilliam Museum, University of Cambridge. Previously, she held the Rijksmuseum Chair for Studio Practice and Technical Art History at the University of Amsterdam (2016-2022) and was an associate professor at the University of Glasgow, where she established Europe's first MA in Technical Art History. As Co-Editor in Chief of ArtMatters: International Journal for Technical Art History and with over 25 years in the field, she has secured numerous grants and held visiting professorships at universities in Beijing, Mexico City, and Venice. Recently, she received the inaugural Brenninkmeijer Senior Research Fellowship at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts. Her work focuses on building interdisciplinary teams of art historians, conservators, and scientists across Cambridge University departments and museums.
